@snitzelll3710 Great ears! Yes, I believe the Fito Paez sound is nearly identical to the Lyle Mays sound-absolutely!! Both artists recorded music using that sound during the same timeframe, so it's possible they used the same keyboard model for that sound. It's also possible that keyboardists at that time were inspired by that sound in general-hearing it used on contemporary records of the period. Thanks for sharing this; it was my first time hearing Fito Paez. 👍🎹

Yes, this should be possible but only using a Nord Stage keyboard where it has the ability to change a patch of an external device via the Extern option when a program is changed. *Setup (requires a NS3 or NS4)* 1. Connect an iPad running onsong to your Nord keyboard by way of the USB port. In this example, the iOS device will act as a "MIDI Host." Note you'll need to have the right cable from the USB B (from the Nord) to either Lightening or USB C on the IOS device. You should be able to buy a single cable to do this. 2. Pre-program the Nord Stage keyboard so that your patches use the "Extern" option whereby changing a program on the Nord then sends MIDI commands out to change the Beat Buddy program. You'll be using the traditional 5-pin MIDI cable out to MIDI in on the Beat Buddy. 3. Once onsong sends the program change to the Nord, the Nord then sends a program change to BeatBuddy (by way of the Extern section). * The above configuration would be a bit unusual and has several limitations. First, it only works with a Nord Stage keyboard requiring the "Extern" feature. A Nord Wave 2, Electro, Grand, Piano or Nord Lead will have no ability to then change the Beat Buddy patch when the Nord program is changed via onsong. Also, for the Nord Stage 4 in particular, turning on the Extern option uses a synth layer, which is then wasted on the BeatBuddy patch change, seeing how you don't need that layer for any other reason. So, this is less than ideal. On the Stage 3 however, the impact is less of an issue because the Extern section is dedicated and doesn't use either of the existing synth layers. *A more ideal setup would be this:* Invest in a WIDI (wireless MIDI) setup. Although perhaps a touch more tricky to set up and a touch less reliable than a wired connection, this method would be seen as a more "standard" best practice in the world of MIDI and connections (in my opinion). It works like this: 1. Connect the iPad running onsong to a WIDI device connected to the Nord keyboard. 2. Connect a second WIDI device to the Beat Buddy and ensure that both MIDI devices are on the same network. 3. Program onsong to send two commands when switching songs. For example, the first command would be assigned to switch programs on the Nord on channel 1 (Nord on Global MIDI 1). Then, a second command would go to the Beat Buddy on Channel 2 (MIDI In). 4. Because the BeatBuddy has the ability to assign separate MIDI channels for In and Out, you could still have the BeatBuddy send clock signals out on MIDI channel 1 to be received by the Nord Stage/Wave 2 on channel 1 if you wanted to sync your arpeggiator and delay to the beat/tempo. * Note that WIDI devices, are powered by their MIDI "Out" port. So both the Nord and the BeatBuddy will be using their "Out" ports as well to power them. Learn more about the basic WIDI connector using my affiliate link: amzn.to/3wTcWOt ⚠ Warning! Setting up wireless MIDI requires extra techie skills and, for some, beyond what they are willing to invest in. Getting these devices updated and connected will take a bit of time and patience, as well as steadfast dedication to learning how it all works if you've never done it before. However, once you arrive at that place, the rewards are plentiful because adding additional wireless devices is available to you using the WIDI platform, and the benefit of not having a bunch of wired MIDI cables running around cannot be understated. But to say that setting up these devices is as easy as plugging in a traditional MIDI cable from A to B is an overreaching statement. Then again, this entire situation is a bit "techie" due to the fact that you are already dealing with LSB/MSB numbers on the Nord and you are attempting to switch two devices simultaneously on separate channels. But like I said, once you get it all connected and working, you'll feel like you've accomplished something special and you'll be excited about the achievement. I was able to learn more about WIDI by watching the tutorials provided by the manufacturer. But it took some time to absorb it and reach the end of the tunnel (and I consider myself very techie). In my case, however, I was connecting 4 Nord keyboards and a computer across two separate WIDI networks - which is a bit extreme. Good luck!

@InacioMatheus I think adding bubble wrap would be a great place to start and would probably work-especially if you get the very thick (big bubble) kind and perhaps do two layers. You may want to check with the airline, too, as you are checking in ahead of time. (Is there insurance you can get for things like this?)

I haven't tested with third-party pedals, but you can test the following to see if they work: 1. Yamaha FC3A 2. Roland DP-10 3. Korg DS-1H ⚠ Just be prepared to return them if they don't work.

The Nord Lead 2 came out in 1997 when portable memory like this was coming of age. Actually, I don't know exactly what will be compatible at this point. Here's a thread on it: www.norduserforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=17120 *And I pulled this from Page 23 of the manual:* Using PCMCIA Cards You can use a standard PCMCIA computer memory card in the slot at the back of the instrument. This allows you to save another three Banks for a total of 297 programmable memory slots and 30 programmable Percussion Kit locations, and 100 Performances (which in practice includes an additional 400 Programs). PCMCIA cards are also perfect for “backing up” (making safety copies of important Programs and Performances). If you purchase the card at a computer retailer, you should ask for this: a 64-kilobyte S-RAM-based, battery PCMCIA card. There are cards with larger memory capacities than 64 kByte, but using one with the Nord Lead 2 is simply a waste of money. Formatting of New Cards For the Nord Lead 2 to use a new PCMCIA card, it must be formatted. The instrument will do this for you if you perform the following steps: 1. Check that the card is not write-protected. This is done with a switch located directly on the card. 2. Insert the card. The display will flash with the letters “Fo”. 3. To format the card, press Store. Storing Programs On the Card This is nothing different from storing into the internal memory Bank. When specifying where to store Program, select one of the memory slots above “99”, as when selecting Programs from the card (see page 11). Storing Performances On the Card This is described on page 35. The other option that looked interesting was to potentially purchase a low-cost converter and use a standard SD card which can both be purchased on Amazon today. However, I'm not sure it will work in the end - might be worth a try however as the old KB cards are not exactly cheap. The other thing I wonder about this solution is that Nord says that you need a "battery backed" card which tells me there is no power for the card from the Nord? So, I don't think the adapter thing will work. Proceed with caution and be willing to experiment a bit if you are going to pursue this. Pls report back what you learn... Good luck!

So, regarding the Extern option on the Nord Stage 4, I decided that on this go around, I would leave the training reserved for those investing in the "Master the Nord Stage 4" course (at least for now). I wanted to find a way to honor those making the investment in the course, so I drew a big line in the sand at the Extern section. This area is a little more advanced - especially when you introduce the notion of having it switch programs on external devices and the many other MIDI options one gets with the NS4. The good news is that it works pretty similar to Stage 3 in a lot of ways. So, I hope that explains my position on things (for better or for worse). The NS4 course has been a monster to create (nearly 300 hours of nights and weekends for the last year). So, I didn't feel right about turning around and releasing all the lessons for free here on UA-cam. (Although, to be honest, the thought had crossed my mind a couple of times because, at the end of the day, I really cherish the idea of helping everyone - not just the ones who invest). But then again, the NS4 is a huge investment for your typical musician, and I'm a big believer in investing a small portion of that overall investment in pro-education for one's equipment for those who think they may benefit from that. They do break down the sound compatibility on this page: www.nordkeyboards.com/sounds/how-to-get-sounds-to-your-product/ And I have some news that will potentially make your day here. You can go right now to the new website and locate the Nord Sample Library 3 sound (pretend you have a Nord Grand for a minute when you filter for the library version 3). If you were to download the solo cells that you know and love, you should be able to easily drag them into the Nord Sound manager while your Grand 2 is connected! It warns you that it needs to convert the samples, but just say OK. Boom!!! The entire library 3 is available to you on your Nord Grand 2. This wasn't the case when the Library 4 came out, but if you upgrade to the latest Nord Sound Manager and ensure that you have the latest OS for a Grand 2, it should just "work." I tested this just now on my Nord Stage 4, which is also library v4 compatible, and it worked out of the box. 👍 P.S. I just did another test with my Nord Piano 5 (also v4 library compatible) and the technique worked there as well!

I think they have the right idea, they need to take the concept further (we need more older models and more details within each comparison). I also believe they have a duty to include the memory somewhere on the website - at the very least, list the specs in the manual, perhaps.

​@@MyKeysToMusic I didn't realize that the piano memory didn't grow from 2 GB and I was very sad when I got my NS4 88, which costed me an arm and a leg to upgrade from my NS3 Compact, which also costed me an arm and a leg to get a few years ago. I would just love to have all the XL pianos on the NS4 to be able to enjoy them, see how they sound different, etc. without messing all the programs up in the instrument. And all the biggest piano samples of the rest of course too. Nord should really have doubled those 2 gigs. Probably they will .. and throw out the NS5 for even more money, cus they can... But this is my only complaint. I love the bloody thing, not planning to sell it anytime soon. Sound is very important for my stupid sensitive ears, and I never heard a better sounding digital piano sound on any other top of the line instrument. But all the rest of the sounds are pretty good too IMHO. Amazing videos as always from Marc, I always learn a lot as a hobbyist, please don't stop making them. Cheers!

@@istvanzoltankiss The memory issue is a sensitive topic for a lot of folks. Yes, we all want more (so long as it doesn't increase the price, right!!) 😄 It's funny that you mention memory, too, because I was researching a Nord Lead 3, and it came with a feature to use an optional external storage card which allowed for the storage of additional programs/patches. I think this could be a solution for people today (and many have already suggested this on the Nord User Forum and within various Facebook groups). But it's really a good idea if they could make it work. Perhaps needing more memory is one of those things that push people to purchase the "next" Nord model or the "bigger" Nord model, and making that a nonissue going forward could hurt sales on their flagship/newer products as they get released? Hard to say. Other manufacturers (like Apple) have a similar strategy. I don't work at Nord, so I don't know how they make their decisions but this could explain why memory is hard to come by. 🤷🏻‍♂ Thanks for your kind words and we'll keep on making content on this end...

@@MyKeysToMusic I don't think NS4 - especially the 'biggest' or call it 'flaship' 88key version - users are asking too much for some sort of update of the piano memory. I sold my NS3 Compact for the hammer action of the NS4 88 and some of the extra effects, and in some ways it was worth it, other ways .... Mmm .... I miss the synth section in the NS3, could squeeze out some beefy classic Prophet and Oberheim sounds of it which I love ... But again, not complaining, at least I'm trying not to (it doesn't work ... 🤫😉). So yeah, extra 2 gigs, so that I don't have to mess up the whole thing if I want to change the pianos or just load all the XL pianos, just so that I can enjoy those nice sounds. That's it. It would make a lot of us Nord-nerds happy I think. 🤓 I can't believe that in 2024 this is not possible. So let's keep in hoping..

@socasack Yes, Nord keyboards can certainly have issues. Although the sustain pedal sticking is something new. I can't slight Roland as I was a Roland guy from 1987 through 2012. I went mostly Nord after that as it was the first keyboard I took the time to "learn" - and once you learn something, it's more fun to use. But yes, they have their quirks at times - and they are a tiny company compared to the likes of Yamaha, Korg and Roland, so maybe that has something to do with it - not sure.

@djmorry8748 Hmm, during the XLR part of the video, I accidentally pulled the cable out, and that caused the lights to adjust. However, later on (after I recorded the video), I think I did further testing on that same cable and determined it was intermittent.

@albertoloera3001 Hey Alberto! First, welcome to the club, and congrats on your decision to purchase a Nord Stage 3 Compact! 1) Check the OS version. (Watch the screen as it turns on, and it will list the OS version.) The latest version is 2.62 (released Nov 16, 2021). If the number is smaller than that, you'll have to upgrade the OS. This is a fairly easy process but does require a Mac or Windows computer (versus an iPad). This is more of a homework item once you get the keyboard versus something you need to be wary of. 2) The first wear-and-tear item on a Nord keyboard is the side panels. Make sure you look at the side panels' top, back, front, and sides. They are made of softwood and chip/dent/scrape easily. The good news is that they are easily replaceable on your own: I have a video of that here: ua-cam.com/video/801cx-oa_m8/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared (this is a fairly expensive part, by the way). 3) There are two OLED screens on the Nord Stage 3. Check that they both turn on and are of equal (and good) brightness. These also have a tendency to die over time for some people. I had a Nord Stage 3 76, whereby the screen still worked, but it went very dim. This, too, is replaceable but a bigger effort as it requires more of the keyboard to be disassembled, and this level of "mechanical engineering" is not for everyone. If you are a person who regularly services your own keyboard, then this shouldn't be an issue. The good news is that you won't be voiding any warranty with the used NS3 if you decide to venture in, but of course, you are taking a risk every time you open the keyboard up. 4) Play each key softly and listen to see if any key "stands out" as either being too loud or too quiet. There are two sensors under each key. When one of the sensors goes, you'll hear the key as either too loud or too quiet. This is a common issue for just about any electronic keyboard made today. Dust and dirt get inside the contact surfaces and cause this issue. Again, this is something you can self-repair but does require a high level of disassembly. There are videos on YT about the repair for this if need be. Repairing the contact keys is a large repair item that requires almost the entire keyboard to be disassembled. 5) Ideally, make sure all knobs and buttons are working. Missing knobs are easy to replace and can be purchased cheaply. There are two types of knobs. Ones with a line and one without (this is not their technical name, but it's the easiest way to describe them to someone new). Regarding buttons: You won't necessarily know at first glance if a button is operational or not, but you can push a button and watch its associated red light and also keep your eyes on the middle screen. You'll often see hints about the button functionality when you push it. The screen hint is a good indicator of whether a button is working (or not). 6) If you have the chance to test all the input/output jacks, that would be ideal. To do this, you'd need a sustain pedal and a control pedal, along with headphones and a small amp. Test all 4 audio outputs, the sustain pedal jack, organ swell, control pedal, etc. The program/up-down can be tested with a sustain pedal, but you'll only get functionality in one direction. I have seen situations where this functionality dies if the keyboard was used with "bad power" in an old house or used at an outdoor gig with a generator. When you are testing the audio, move the volume knob up and down to be sure you don't hear static. Again, this is another wear and tear item - although this issue never happened with any of my Nord keyboards. 7) Test the pitch stick and mod wheel. You'll want to make sure both have free and smooth movement. Not all sounds are triggered by the mod wheel but most synth sounds are. Just turn the synth engine on and test those two items. 8) Turn the organ engine on and test each drawbar. Sometimes, the OLED display doesn't correctly display the position of the drawbars. Although I never had an issue with any Stage keyboard, I have an Electro 6 whereby the screen doesn't always match the drawbar - (it's an issue with the drawbars, but it wasn't a big enough issue for me to fix). I had purchased that one second-hand, so I suspect something happened along the way with the previous owner. 9) Test the aftertouch. The NS3 has "aftertouch," which will respond when the keys are "pushed in and held." You'll have to dial up a program that has the letters "AT" at the end of its name. When you see "AT" at the end of the name, it typically means the sound has an aftertouch morph built-in. Just make sure you can trigger it. Those are the main items to check. Obviously, play it and make sure the keys feel good, are responsive and smooth, and are all aligned properly, etc. Best of luck. *When ready, you can consider checking out my free and paid courses for the Nord Stage 3 found at my website www.MyKeysToMusic.com*

@solojim Hey Jim. I love the look of that program you found, "Stage Traxx3" because it seems to specialize in just the chord chart (versus the complete sheet music). Also, the MIDI-wrench was required for older versions of the iPad and software. Nowadays, you will likely be able to directly connect your device to a given wireless MIDI solution without the need for a helper program such as MIDI wrench. You can be yourself as they call it. “YOU tube.“ You may benefit by investing in a paid course for Logic where you can be critical about the presentation and you can also avoid the ads which many believe contain an equal amount if not more of a distraction in the learning process. 👍. I get it! As this information is completely free for the taking “you get what you pay for.” Luckily, you have thousands and thousands of choices of people who will teach you about Logic for free on UA-cam and they might even do it with no opinion about music, the creative process, what inspires them, artist they like, or any of the human stuff. @solojim Hey Jim. Anything being sold in an Apple store today should easily handle anything that forScore can throw at it. So, find the size you like and get something in your budget in that size. If you want something that will "last longer" - from a processing standpoint, you could go Pro. You might like the really big screens they offer too. However, even the basic "IPad" model (their base model) could easily run forScore. Honestly, I'd let size be your biggest decision and then work your way back from that. *More commentary about this:* If this is your first iPad, consider this. They are very versatile. You could use it for your music on one day, and then watch movies from it the next. If you do plan on getting into "music composition/recording" and want to use it as a DAW, then you might lean a little towards getting a more powerful one. However, I'm of the opinion that it's easier to compose music with a DAW that is computer-based versus an iPad. But that could be me just being a computer-oriented dude since 1986. My mouse and keyboard can run circles around anything I could possibly create on the iPad. But for the forScore stuff, it's great and many musicians (as you know) are using the iPad to replace the piles of paper-oriented sheet music running around everywhere. It does work well for a set-list controller, too. 👍 Best of luck!

@ProclaimJesus Hello! *Let's see if I have this correctly first:* 1) I assume your Nord keyboard is connected from audio out 1 & 2 into a Stereo DI box that goes into the FOH mixer on channels 5 & 6. 2) You then want to record everything from the mixer into your DAW and maintain the Nord Stage 3's stereo sound in the recording. *Assuming I have understood this correctly, here are a few questions to help us get oriented:* Q1: Are you recording and/or mixing in other instruments (an entire band) from the mixer or just the keyboard? Q2: Do you want to see the keyboard as separate mono tracks in your DAW where you can then dictate each track's exact panning and details? Or do you want the keyboard to be recorded as a single stereo track in your DAW? (A lot of this may be decided upon by your mixing board's capability). Q3: Does your mixing board double as an audio interface, where you capture the audio via USB directly into the computer, or is it going into a separate audio interface first?

@@MyKeysToMusic thank you very much for your reply. Yes you have it correctly for number 1 and 2. The problem is in the daw, the piano sounds bad to start with. I’m using a Midas m32R, the quality of the piano seems to be lost in the chain. So I’m capturing everything into the daw via the interface of the mixer. What I used to do is pan channel 5 to the left and 6 to the right in the daw but that just gives me 2 mono tracks panned left and right whereas a proper stereo piano recording for a keyboard will normally pan the low end on the left and the high end on the right in the stereo spectrum.. so as I walk right on the keys, it’s evident in the recording.. because the notes are spread out… really hope you get me..🙌 How do I get it to sound stereo in the daw

@@ProclaimJesus I know what you are talking about when it comes to the bad-sounding piano, and this is likely because your audio ends up as mono. You may have to set your DAW channel so that it receives 5 & 6 together as a single stereo track from your mixer (if your mixer /DAW supports that functionality). @jackberlien8916 Hey Jack! This is most likely a Yamaha CP-30 Digital grand piano from the 1980s (when this song came out). The Yamaha CP-30 was introduced in 1976. If you own a Nord keyboard, dial up the "DigiGrand 1" found in the digital section of your Nord keyboard (from the Piano Engine). You'll be pretty close just doing that. 🎹 You'll be amazed at how close this Nord sound is, especially in the bass piano notes-it's nearly identical on the lower end. Oh, and I think Elton John used a CP-70 for many things and has been a long time endorser of Yamaha starting in 1993. Both the CP-30 and CP-70 are beloved instruments being used on many recordings over the years. Modern bands like Keane use the Yamaha CP-70 as their main sound in fact. I feature the "Keane" sound in my latest course offering: "Master the Nord Stage 4" where I imitate the Keane sound to a "T" - so much fun!

I had deduced or gotten a clue that it might be CP-30 electronic piano (no physical mechanism, right - unlike the CP-70 which is an electrified mini-grand piano with strings) but couldn't verify. Unfortunately I don't have a Nord (went through a couple Nord Leads years ago and sold them - just didn't like as much as my Prophet, OBXa or Roland analogs). I have a Motif XF and got CP-30 sounds from somewhere but they have no depth or character - just sounds plinky and nothing really like the Hall & Oates record. So have you tried and compared and really think that's it? Maybe with some effect(s) on it? To that end, what might be the cheapest (i.e. outdated model Nord) I could get on eBay that would have this sound in it? Thanks again, Jack

@@jackberlien8916 Hey Jack - wanted to circle back to you on this one. You had a question about what is the cheapest/outdated model Nord you can get on eBay that has the sound. That would probably be a Nord Electro 3 or something like that. The DigiGrand 1 is generated in the "Piano Engine" (not the sample player area). So, you would need a Nord keyboard that supports the piano engine and I believe the Electro 3 was the first one to come with an official Piano Engine. I have just confirmed on the Nord website that the Electro 3 supports the Piano Library version 5 which does include the DigiGrand 1 (and 2). Before taking the plunge, you'll want to get absolute confirmation that the sound will do the trick before making the purchase as used purchases tend to be final. You should be able to walk into your favorite Nord dealer and audition the sound on any of the modern Nords to test the DigiGrand1 from the piano engine. Oh and if you're really lucky, I think you can get the Electro 3 as a rack module!! Yet, as I reflect on the effort for all this, it kind of sounds like a bit of monkey business just for one sound. I wonder if, at this point, you could find the sound in software like Apple MainStage or something that runs on an iPad and such. It might be cheaper/easier to adopt, and it might also open up your world to other sounds that are not covered by your Roland/Yamaha hardware. Just a thought. Today's software choices are starting to run circles around the hardware in terms of sound capability (for better or for worse). I realize that introducing an iPad or computer to the rig is also a bit of monkey business as well. I guess it's what you find the lesser of two evils at this point. That or you can just live with the Motif XF for now. 🤷🏻‍♂

@germanshepherdlover2613 Correct. A factory reset can only be done via a computer as that's where the factory sounds will be transferred from. Hopefully, you got it all to work.

@simeonbanner6204 Hey Simon! Thanks for sharing this background and history. YES!! "The Rockford Files-Main Theme" is exactly a pulse-width waveform to my ears. Well done on that association. You don't need expensive gear to get started with sound exploration and creation. There are online sites, for example, that provide miscellaneous "sound generation" apps for free. Here is a starting list: synth.playtronica.com Besides this, if you have a Mac computer, you have pretty much all the music-making stuff you need in GarageBand in that one app. If you go with synth hardware, then that's where the cost starts adding up. If you want to "record" and be a content creator, then things add up more because you need stuff to record audio and video, etc. All that equipment starts adding up and then you'll need a decent computer as well along the way. Perhaps even more daunting is the tech skills required and all the "learning" you're going to have to do - but that's the fun part - or at least it's supposed to be! Good luck on your journey.
